Haz-Mat insulation handling and/or removal is a procedure that should only be performed by an experienced company that are certified and specializes in this type of work. Prior to any insulation handling, all large organic debris (feces, partially eaten carcasses and/or dead animals should be removed and affected areas be thoroughly disinfected.
The entire attic system must then be thoroughly disinfected with a combination of broad-spectrum germicides which will kill and neutralize any germs, bacteria and mycotic infectants which may be present to due animal habitation, fecal and urine territory markings. Care should be taken to make sure all the existing contaminated insulation is thoroughly wetted down with combination of broad-spectrum disinfectants.
Once insulation has been disinfected it can be safely removed and disposed of. After all the insulation is removed, the entire attic system will be machine fogged with broad-spectrum, hospital-grade disinfectants to ensure complete attic disinfection. At this point the new insulation can now be properly installed.
Dead Animal Removal & Clean-Up
If you have animals living anywhere within your home or business, there is one thing that you are surely guaranteed… that eventually, you will have a dead one in the building. In the unlikely event that you have never smelled a dead. Decaying, maggot-ridden corpse, you will find that its smell will stay with you for the rest of your life and you will NEVER forget it. I have seen burly 250+ pound men on their knees retching after only a sniff or two. So what you may ask, is the solution. The solution is simply to professionally have these animal(s) removed from your building before they die and then have your building professionally animal-proofed to prevent entry to new animals.
The greatest prevention of animals in your building is simply to have it animal-proofed. In the event you have an animal die before it is animal-proofed, here is what will need to be done to remedy the odor.
a) If possible, find, remove and dispose of the carcass.
b) In the event that the animal(s) have died in the wall or any other inaccessible area. You must cut the wall or ceiling to get to it.
c) Once carcass is found and removed, you must dispose of the surrounding insulation and/or drywall
d) Spray the area thoroughly with strong disinfectant (I recommend plain bleach.
e) Leave the area open for at least a day to air out.
f) Immediately try to find the other live animal(s) before they die next (most animals in a building enter to have babies and there are rarely less than two in at a time).
Dead Animal Odor Elimination
These unpleasant odors are caused by various types of animals dying and decaying in or around the home or business. Small rodents such as mice and rats can easily crawl into wall voids and other small crevices and smell for many weeks if they die and decompose there. This commonly occurs when a poison is used to kill these rodents.
Larger animals such as squirrels, raccoons and opossum can enter attics or inaccessible crawl spaces and may smell for several months if they die there. Other dead animal smells could originate from dead birds in attics, frogs and lost pets such as snakes. gerbils, turtles, dogs, cats. In general, the larger the dead animal, the longer the smell will persist and appropriate odor control treatment will be necessary. If you’re not sure if you are smelling a dead animal, you’re probably not. There is no mistaking a dead animal smell with anything you’ve ever smelled before. People often times describe it as “a sickly, sweet smell”. If you see large number of maggots or flies near where you smell this odor odor, you are probably very close to the dead culprit.
Unfortunately, most ventilation systems only recirculate room air and remove large particulate matter such as dirt, dust, and lint. Ncodous dead animal odors are left free to recirculate in the air you breathe. Over time, they could increase in concentration and result in serious odor and indoor air pollution problems e.g. sick building syndrome.
