Florida has a great diversity of amphibians, including frogs and toads. Most of these creatures are benign nuisances and either need to be occasionally fished out of the pool or will keep you up all night with they’re incessant mating song (tree frog). But there is one of these creatures which is highly dangerous to small children and pets… the loathsome Bufo Toad. These animals have a highly dangerous poison exuded from their skin and can make a small child extremely ill and many times will kill a cat or dog that bites it. There is no antidote for this toxin and it’s a 50-50 chance whether the pet will survive the toxin. They are large and slow moving and make an easy target for pets (especially puppies and kittens.
They are found everywhere but usually under leaves or in low lying shrubbery. Care should be taken, as there is no antidote for the poison exuded from they’re skin. Never pick up one of these animals and always use care if you see one. It’s advisable to leave it alone and call us out. We will remove it and can apply repellents which will deter further toads from coming on your property.
